أما فيما يخص الثورة الصناعية الرابعة، فقد كان أول مَنْ تحدث عن هذا المصطلح هم الألمان في العام 2011م ولكن إطلاقها وبشكل رسمي وعلى المستوى الدولي حدث في المنتدى الاقتصادي العالمي بدافوس في العام 2016م. وقد بنيت هذه المرحلة الرابعة من الثورات الصناعية المتتالية على ما وصلت إليه الثورة الصناعية الثالثة من تقدم كبير في مجالات الاتصالات والإلكترونيات والتقدم التقني الكبير، حيث بدأ هذا العصر الصناعي الحيوي من الدخول والتغلغل في مجالات وتطبيقات جديدة وفريدة مثل الذكاء الصناعي (AI) وإنترنت الأشياء (IoT) والحوسبة الكمية والإنسان الآلي (Robot) والطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد (3Dprinter) وتقنية النانو والتقنية الحيوية... إلخ.
وتتميز الثورة الصناعية الرابعة بأنها ربطت ملايين البشر بالويب وحسنت من كفاءة أداء الأعمال على مستوى الفرد والمنظمة من خلال تفعيل أكبر لما يسمى بالواقع المعزز (Augmented Reality)، الذي يمزج بين المعلومات الرقمية والمعلومات المستقاة من البيئة المحيطة، كما ساهمت الثورة الصناعية الرابعة في تعزيز مفهوم اقتصاديات العمل الحر أو الاقتصاد التشاركي، الذي يعتمد على الوظائف المرنة والمؤقتة، بالإضافة إلى مقرات العمل الافتراضية بهدف خفض التكاليف، وذلك بالاستفادة من مدى التقدم التقني الكبير في مجال الإنترنت والاتصالات وسرعة مشاركة البيانات والمعلومات وكأن الجميع يعيش في قرية صغيرة.
كما كان لتقنيات الثورة الصناعية الرابعة دور في تعزيز طرق التعلم والتدريب من خلال استخدام مفهوم التقنيات الغامرة (Impressive technology)، الذي يتم فيها الدمج بين الواقع الحقيقي والافتراضي، وقد بدأ الحديث مؤخراً عن استخدام هذه التقنية أيضاً في مجالات الهندسة والبناء، حيث إنها تعتمد على أسلوب المحاكاة ثلاثية الأبعاد، التي توفر كثيرا من الجهد والوقت في عملية البحث والتطوير مما سينعكس بشكل إيجابي على التكاليف والجودة.
واستعشاراً لهذه الأهمية وكعادتها في السبق والريادة، فقد دشنت المملكة العربية السعودية مؤخراً مركز الثورة الصناعية الرابعة بالشراكة بين مدينة الملك عبدالعزيز للعلوم والتقنية، والمنتدى الاقتصادي العالمي، وتهدف من هذه الخطوة إلى دعم وتمكين منظومة البحث والتطوير والابتكار، بالإضافة إلى تسخير تقنيات الثورة الصناعية الرابعة لخدمة التنمية في مجالات عدة كالنقل والأنظمة الصحية وغيرها، وتطبيق الحوكمة المرنة بين الحكومة وقطاع الأعمال والمجتمع المدني.
